Cosby lawyers try to discredit accuser's story

In her testimony, she recalled the harrowing experience and said that Cosby drugged and molested her at his suburban Philadelphia home. She testified Wednesday she woke up naked in bed with the comedian, believing they'd had sex.

"Put them down", Cosby replied, she said, allegedly gesturing for her to swallow them with water. But once her playing career ended, Mesereau said, her prospects dimmed.

"I'm not sure I can think of one victim of sexual assault who did not feel humiliated, does not blame herself to some extent, and is not deeply ashamed about it", she said.

She said she couldn't speak and couldn't get her limbs to move.

Under cross examination, Thomas testified that she chronicled her trip to Reno in a scrapbook and recorded a cassette tape at the home where she had the encounter with Cosby. And while Jackson was not permitted to testify in the first trial after Constand said she did not know her personally, she will be testifying for the defense in hopes of undermining the prosecution's entire case.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done. I was in shock. It's not hush money, and I really resent people calling it hush money.

Unlike in the first trial, jurors in this case were told Cosby agreed to the $US3.4 million settlement in 2006.

Janice Baker-Kinney was a 24-year-old bartender in 1982, when she says Cosby gave her two pills that made her lose consciousness. She says Cosby then assaulted her.

"I do not", she said.

She said she was "very scared" about going to police because "he was a Temple trustee".

She also described an invitation from Cosby to Foxwoods Resort Casino in CT, where he invited her to his room but passed out. As a physically fit former professional basketball player, she was confident she could handle him.

BENSHOFF: Yes. In opening statements his lead attorney, Tom Mesereau, made a pretty forceful framing for this idea that Constand is a, quote, "con man". "But I wasn't threatened by him and I didn't judge him".

The defense has called the other accusers irrelevant, urging jurors to focus only on the charges that Cosby is facing.

Cosby could face 10 years in prison if convicted.

A jury deadlocked after last year's trial, unable to reach a verdict after more than 52 hours of deliberations over six days.

Constand follows five other accusers who also testified against the 80-year-old comedian.

Overall, the defense has been working hard to paint Cosby's chief accuser, the woman on whom the entire retrial really rests, as a desperate person who has manufactured falsehoods about an old and lonely man in order to make money and gain fame.

During almost three hours of cross-examination, which will continue on Monday, defense attorney Tom Mesereau established a total of nine face-to-face visits between Cosby and Constand before and after the alleged attack and asked whether Constand had ever seen Cosby's wife during those meetings. Each of the women has alleged the same combination of pills which Cosby encouraged them to take as "relaxants" before he assaulted them while they were in a semi-conscious state.

Feden asked Constand, "Were you able to verbalize and tell him to stop?"

The former Temple University staffer admitted that over the 18 months she knew Cosby, she'd accepted cashmere sweaters and perfume from the married father-of-five - but insisted their relationship was never romantic.

Now a defence witness, Jackson is expected to testify that Constand once told her she meant to fabricate a claim of sexual assault against a celebrity to earn money. Constand said she blacked out.

She added she once sent a Facebook message to Constand.

The defence was also allowed in this trial to present evidence that Constand told a friend, Margo Jackson, in 2004 it would be easy to set up a celebrity on a fictitious sexual assault charge. His lawyers have portrayed Constand as a gold-digging con artist.

The massage therapist grew visibly agitated as she was aggressively questioned by Mesereau, chewing her lip and shifting around on the witness stand as the lawyer probed inconsistencies in her statements. "I remember thinking how wrong it was - how very, very wrong it was".

Cosby says Constand consented to their sexual encounter.
