Dr. BR Ambedkar's Birth Anniversary Being Observed In Kharibari

President of India Ram Nath Kovind did the same by saying, "Homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary".

In Marathwada, comprising eight districts, various factions of Dalit community, social organisations, government offices, panchayati raj institutions have organised programmes to pay tributes to the "Mahamanav" on this occasion.

Kovind urged people to follow the path of peace, harmony and brotherhood shown by Ambedkar.

A person had died in Meerut, another in the nearby Muzaffarnagar in the April 2 nationwide Dalit agitation. The President was happy to note that Dr Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary was commemorated at the United Nations in 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that Dr Ambedkar, like Dr Martin Luther King Jr, is an inspiring figure for all humanity.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the BJP can inaugurate as many memorials as they like, "but the fact is that they are reducing sub-plans, financial allocations". Six of them were Dalits.

Leaders of all prominent parties will garland the statue of Dr Ambedkar at Hazratganj while BSP leaders would organize meetings at Samata Mulak Chauraha.

He also launched the Gram Swaraj scheme to empower weaker sections, tribals, women and backward people, besides the Van Dhan scheme to ensure better marketing and value addition to minor forest produce to benefit forest dwellers.


Meanwhile, another statue of BR Ambedkar was today found vandalised in the state's Jaunpur district, reported news agency IANS. The incident in Richhpal Garhi village of Bisrakh came to light when the villagers spotted the damaged statue.

The situation was said to be under control as authorities imposed prohibitory conditions and deployed additional police force.

A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the culprits behind the act, police said. Police, however, controlled the situation. At some places, policemen have been deputed in areas having statues.

A group of Sikhs also protested outside the United Nations headquarters in NY against alleged atrocities perpetrated against minority communities in India.

The event commenced at 8.00 am with a prayer song sung by the choir members followed by thought for the day by Vaishnavi Suresh of Class X and Significance of the Day by Sonali Umanath of Class X. Principal Fr Robert D'Souza, vice-principal Belita Mascarenhas along with the student representatives offered a floral tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar.

Dalit leaders also took strong objection to the painting of the upper part of an under construction Ambedkar memorial in Gorakhpur (UP) in saffron colour.

After its new-found bonhomie with the BSP won it two Lok Sabha seats in recent bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party is set to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti in a big way, taking their friendship a step forward. The father of Indian constitution and independent India's first minister of Law and Justice was also an extraordinary scholar and thinker on issues of social and economic importance.
