She also said that she and her twin sister Barbara Pierce Bush spoke to their grandmother on Sunday night, sharing, "She is in great spirits and she's a fighter".

Bush Hager also described her grandmother's bluntness, which earned her the nickname "The Enforcer". "For everybody's prayers and thoughts and just know the world is better because she's in it". Hager revealed that her grandparents share a very close relationship. She was an unvarnished purveyor of the truth and motivated us all to be better people.

Hager's comments to NBC's "Today" show Monday come a day after the family announced the 92-year-old Bush has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and is instead focusing on "comfort care" at home in Houston.

Bush's current condition was not elaborated on.

No specific illness was provided but the former first lady suffers from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The 92-year-old is one of only two women (along with Abigail Adams) to both serve as first lady and be the mother of a USA president. She married to George H.W. Bush when she was 19 and while he was a young naval aviator. Her husband, George H.W. Bush, was the nation's 41st president while her son George W. Bush, one of the couple's six children, was the 43rd president.

It said that Mrs Bush, after consulting with relatives and doctors, had made a decision to "focus on comfort care" at the family home in Houston.

US President Donald Trump did not send wishes to the ailing former first lady, but Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen said "they were praying for Barbara Bush and the entire Bush family".
