Harper breaks bat, muscles out 406-foot HR

With AP Photos. This was shear power by Bryce Harper.

Harper hit his major league-high eighth home run, and his 85-cm, 0.89-kg Marucci bat paid the price.

The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the first on a double by Michael Conforto which was followed by a RBI single from Todd Frazier.

April has always been a great month for Harper, but he has never been as locked in as he is right now, as he approaches more home runs than strikeouts on the year. The solo shot was his eighth of the season and came on the first pitch from Mets starter Jacob deGrom. All that was left of the bat was a small portion of the handle.

On his way back to the dugout, Harper celebrated by pulling up the sleeve of his shirt to show off his biceps. "I heard the bat break, and then I looked".

In San Diego, Yasmani Grandal hit a grand slam, Matt Kemp belted a three-run homer and Ryu Hyun-jin struck out nine in six strong innings for Los Angeles.

"Yeah, that was pretty shocking", deGrom said, with a slight grin. The game is now in the top of the second. He is 2-7 lifetime vs. Washington - tagged by the Nats in his final two starts in spring training, he got sent to the minors to begin the season. Over the weekend, he was one for 15 with 10 strikeouts against Washington.
