He said in a statement on Friday that his absence was "to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family".

Tributes for "America's grandmother", as she was dubbed, have poured in from across the globe, with many praising her work in adult literacy.

Bush - wife to the 41st USA president and mother to the 43rd - died Tuesday at her home in Texas aged 92, surrounded by her family. That includes Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, who, like so many many others, came out to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs.

Following the ceremony, Mrs Bush was buried on the grounds of the George HW Bush Library and Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station, next to her daughter, Robin, who died of leukaemia, aged 3.

Four former USA presidents were among some 1,500 mourners who gathered at a Houston church for her funeral, after the matriarch of one of the country's most prominent political dynasties died on Tuesday at age 92.

After her meeting, Bush insisted on stopping and thanking the officers who had warmly welcomed her to New Jersey. Former President George H.W. Bush made a last minute decision to greet mourners at the church. Behind them, her husband and former President George H.W. Bush followed in his wheelchair, which was pushed by their son, former President George W. Bush.

One of just two first ladies to have a child elected president, Barbara Bush was widely admired for her plainspoken style and her advocacy for causes including literacy and AIDS awareness. Barbara Bush's son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, will deliver a eulogy along with her longtime friend, Susan Baker, and historian Jon Meacham, according to a statement from the Bush family.

A total of 1,500 guests were expected to attend her service and pay their respects, both to her memory and her grieving family. The park is a place Barbara Bush and her husband often frequented.

Thousands of people on Friday paid respects to Bush, who died Tuesday at her Houston home at age 92.

A former Secret Service agent on Friday recounted how a trip that former first lady Barbara Bush once took through New Jersey inspired his lifelong devotion to her.

Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton were there, as well as former first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn also missed the funeral.

SPECIAL INTERACTIVE: Barbara Bush, A Life Well ReadThe funeral program shows that her grandchildren will also play prominent roles: her granddaughters will offer a reading during the service and her grandsons will serve pallbearers.
