NHL: Flyers come on strong late, extend series vs. Penguins

NHL: Flyers come on strong late, extend series vs. Penguins

Over Pittsburgh's last ten outings, eight of them have been decided by two or more goals (the team is 5-3 in those games).

Two weeks ago, fans were ringing the Wells Fargo Center with chants of "M-V-P" for captain Claude Giroux, who nearly single-handedly helped the Flyers get to these playoffs. Two minutes later, the Flyers responded with a shorthanded goal by Valtteri Fippula sending the game tied at two going into the third. Filppula has been excellent on the first line for the Flyers, and right now he's the difference between the Flyers trailing 2-0 and keeping this game tied. In all, the Flyers played like a desperate team and that's just the kind of approach they needed. They scored four goals on their first 10 shots of the first period, chasing Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk after just 12 minutes of action.

Although team captain Claude Giroux has not had his "A-level" game thus far in the series, he delivered the game's first goal on Friday on a ideal shot under the crossbar. His fourth goal of the series was Winnipeg's fifth of the game.

The Penguins got some momentum rolling in the second period. Rookie winger Jordan Greenway showed some potential late in the season and in the first round against Winnipeg, but the Wild need more young talent to come through the pipeline so that they can refresh the roster.

In one of the most iconic (and longest) games in National Hockey League history, the Penguins and Flyers battled for eight periods in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

They coast, for the most part, through the regular season.

Michel Neuvirth's lapse in judgement occurred in the second period of the Penguins' 5-0 trashing of the Flyers Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

After a two-month-long radiation treatment, Mario Lemieux returned to the Penguins for their late-season matchup with the hated Flyers fans.

When Bruins star Patrice Bergeron's streak of 104 consecutive playoff games ended because of an undisclosed injury, unheralded Riley Nash excelled centering the top line of Marchand and David Pastrnak in Game 4 in Toronto. He led a penalty kill that kept Pittsburgh off the board for all five power plays. Hornqvist had 29 goals and 20 assists for 49 points in 70 games this season.

It takes monumental efforts from multiple players to stave off elimination from the playoffs when you're facing the two-time defending champion Penguins.

He entered the zone then set up in the slot.

In goal for the Penguins, Matt Murray made 21 saves. As soon as Dubnyk sat down near the gate, captain Mikko Koivu moved down to him and gave him a tap-Minnesota's offense scored just nine goals in the five-game series, and none since the second period of Game 3.

Nashville has lost three of the last four games when it was a road favorite and has given up the first goal in each game of this series.

Philadelphia jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second period, but Washington came roaring into the third period. As Brian Dumoulin skated into the corner he tripped over the goal line and fell to the ice. Just him being out there was huge.

Jonas Brodin and Matt Dumba - The Wild blueliners were both on the ice for three even-strength goals against in a 5-0 Game Five loss at Winnipeg.

The Flyers, for the first time since Game 2, responded.

The Penguins pushed back in the second period, opening up a 9-1 shot advantage in the first 12 minutes of the period.

Crosby slyly carried the puck with his stick and slipped it right by Neuvirth's left skate. With Scott Laughton all alone in front of the Penguins net Couturier fire a long-range shot to the net.

Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier are excellent offensive threats and Shayne Gostisbehere can fire the puck from the back end, but the Flyers have to find a way to shut down or slow down the Penguins.

Matt Read then closed the victory by hitting an empty net.
