Remembering Barbara Bush, 'Beautiful Until the Day She Died'

The homily was delivered by the rector at St. Martin's, the Rev. Russell Levenson, Jr., who spoke of Barbara Bush's honesty, her love for others, and her love for Houston.

The funeral for former first lady Barbara Bush, who died earlier this week, was held on Saturday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush thanked his mother's caregivers, guests and those who had offered their compassion as her health failed. The invitation-only service was also attended by former ambassadors, members of Congress, sports stars and Houston business owners.

Former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter will not attend, as Jimmy Carter will be on a trip overseas and Rosalynn Carter is recovering from recent intestinal surgery, a spokesperson for the Carter Center said in a statement Thursday.

Thousands of mourners paid respects to Barbara Bush ahead of the memorial on Friday, as casket lay in repose inside the church.

President Donald Trump isn't attending to avoid security disruptions and "out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service", according to the White House.


"She was candid and comforting, steadfast and straightforward, honest and loving", said the historian and author Jon Meacham, who wrote a biography of George H.W. Bush and was one of three eulogists whom Barbara Bush herself selected before her death.

Elizabeth Andrews, one of the granddaughters of the late former first lady, read the passage Ecclesiastes 3:1-14. She was the second woman in US history to be the wife of one president and the mother of another.

"About 1,500 people are expected at the private service Saturday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston".

Country music star Lee Greenwood traveled the country with Barbara Bush and knew her for over 30 years. Bush and her husband, George H.W. Bush, lengthy worshipped.

Hours before the service, guests arrived at a different church several miles away to be bussed to the venue, walking past a throng of media. But he has since grew close to his predecessor and Barbara Bush, visiting them at their summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, the former secretary of state, attended the funeral.

Also now seated in the front of the church, in the same pew, are two other former presidents - Bill Clinton and Barack Obama - along with their wives and current first lady Melania Trump.
