Serious bus accident kills over 30 people in North Korea

"We are investigating the cause" of the accident which occurred yesterday, ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, hours after Beijing reported "heavy casualties" in the crash.

China's foreign ministry says that a substantial numbers of Chinese visitors are murdered and wounded in a "leading traffic accident" in North Korea. The tweet was later deleted.

China's state-run broadcaster CCTV broadcast footage of an upside-down, mangled bus in the dark amid rainfall and a patient being treated at a hospital.

North Korea is a popular, if offbeat, destination for Chinese tourists, especially those from the country's northeast.

China was informed about the accident on Sunday night, and its embassy personnel in Pyongyang rushed to the scene and are working to manage the situation, the foreign ministry said in a statement earlier.

In this image taken from video footage by China's CCTV via AP Video on Sunday, a bus which carries Chinese and North Koreans is seen overturn after an accident in North Hwanghae province, south of Pyongyang, North Korea. Americans have been banned from travelling to North Korea without special permission from the US State Department since September amid concerns about the fate of those detained there in the past.

China is also the secretive regime's main political ally and largest trading partner.

The province lies south of the capital and stretches to the border with the South, including the city of Kaesong, an ancient Korean capital with historical sites.

The Chinese health ministry said it was sending a team of doctors as well as medical equipment and supplies to North Korea to treat survivors.

More recently, the area hosted a manufacturing complex operated with South Korea.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated the emergency mechanism overnight and is fully engaged in the disposal work".

But the road between Pyongyang and Kaesong, which the tourist bus borrowed according to NK News, is considered to be one of the best in the country; it connects Sinuiju, on the Chinese border, to the demilitarized zone with South Korea.
