Arsene Wenger 'very sad' to leave Arsenal with Europa League heartbreak

Arsene Wenger's men suffered a 1-0 loss to Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano on Friday (AEST), beaten 2-1 on aggregate in the last four.

"Maybe we will have good news but the first signs are not good", the Frenchman added. 'Even very frustrated, as well, because when you go out of a competition and you had the performances in 180 minutes that we had, it very hard to take. "I'm very, very sad to leave the club with this exit". The suffering is of course very strong tonight. It can be very cruel but sometimes it is nice.

Arsenal is looking to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League, while Atletico is looking to get something from a season that promised so much but has so far delivered little.

Atletico splashed out 57 million euros (US$68.30 million) to bring Costa back from Chelsea past year and he repaid some of that fee by breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano. He is a World Cup victor and these are crocodile tears I am seeing from him and he is not conning me."Wenger said he "does not agree" with Keown's comments about Ozil's display and insisted the midfielder "gave a lot".He added: "We lose as a team. The tie should have been over in the first game". "We had plenty of opportunities and we lose as a team".

"I believe a man has to give his best as long as he is somewhere, with all my commitment and energy I would like to walk out of Arsenal one day and think until the last day I focused only on Arsenal".

He also cursed referee Gianluca Rocchi's leniency in the face of Atletico's fierce challenges. "The risky situations were there but in the two boxes we missed something. They have great defenders". (Diego) Godin saved five or six goals. Costa, substitute Fernando Torres and Koke all had half chances to put the game beyond Arsenal's reach but they all missed.

"It was a very intense game between two teams that gave everything".

Atletico will meet Marseille in the final in Lyon on May 16 after the French team lost 2-1 to Salzburg following extra-time in Austria but went through 3-2 on aggregate. "I would say the victor of tonight's game is the clear favourite in the competition".
