First Signs Posted to US Embassy in Jerusalem

US Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, began sending invitations for a ceremony organised by the United States and Israel on 14 May to celebrate the American embassy's move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Road signs directing vehicles and pedestrians to the "US Embassy" were erected on Monday across Jerusalem only days ahead of the relocation of America's mission from Tel Aviv to the US's newly recognized capital.

However, Hadashot news reported Monday that the country's incoming president, Mario Abdo Benítez - a member of Cartes's conservative Colorado party - will join the incumbent for the opening of the Jerusalem embassy. In 1980, Israel annexed East Jerusalem and declared the whole city as its capital, a move that was rejected by most countries in the world.

"Strengthening settlements in Judea and Samaria is first and foremost in Israel's security interest", said Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, using the biblical names favoured by pro-settlement Israelis for the north and south West Bank.

In related news, Paraguay announced that it would move its embassy to Jerusalem by the end of the month, in a ceremony to be attended by President Horacio Cartes.

The move prompted worldwide condemnation and triggered a wave of protests in the occupied Palestinian territories.

However, the decision to kick off the event in Jerusalem was met with widespread condemnation from Palestinian officials and activists who accused organisers of "whitewashing Israel's ongoing crimes".

Barkat's tweet comes as the new embassy is set to open in May to mark Israel's 70th anniversary.

Opening the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem will have a price too and it is one worth paying.

Israel claims the entire city as its eternal capital.

While Israel views Jerusalem as its capital, Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. They were promised East Jerusalem as their capital by worldwide community during the USA sponsored peace talks through last several decades.
