Potential new cure found for baldness

The drug was originally created to treat osteoporosis, but it may have potential to cure baldness as well. Now, researchers must conduct clinical trials to determine if topical use of WAY-316606 is safe and effective for humans.

Baldness is complicated - and no, it's not all your mother's fault.

Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss, which experts say can be extremely distressing for men.

That makes any potential new approach exciting.

Baldness could be beaten by an experimental drug originally created to treat brittle bone disease, research suggests.

The Manchester team began with a search for novel agents for treating male patternbaldness, it discounted some candidates which were known to have hair growth as a side-effect due to their other harmful effects. The research team deems that these finding can bring up a completely new method to treat hair loss in women and men as well. So the researchers tried to identify the component of that medication that triggers hair growth.

The scientists discovered that the drug reduces the expression of a protein that blocks the growth of hair follicles.

The study at the University of Manchester suggests the answer could lie in an experimental drug created to treat the brittle bone disease, osteoporosis. Unfortunately, it has been reported that Cyclosporine's side effects (shaking, headaches, vomiting and swollen gums) were not worth the risk.

To see if the drug is effective, the team used follicles donated from 40 patients that had hair transplant surgery. In that context, the drug triggered hair growth.

"That creates our analysis clinically really relevant, as most hair loss lookup studies merely utilize cell civilization", he explained. But more research is needed, and a practical use is still a ways off.

At present, only 2 medications, finasteride and minoxidil are obtainable for treating the androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness)-the typical kind of thinning hair-line hair loss in males. However, they decided not to go ahead with its application as a hair growth stimulator owing to its other side effects.
