Black Panther director Ryan Coogler wants to make a female-focused spin-off

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler wants to make a female-focused spin-off

Ryan Coogler, the critically-acclaimed director of films such as "Creed" and "Fruitvale Salvation", said he is open to the idea of making a "Black Panther" spinoff focussing on the women characters of the film.

During a almost two-hour-long talk with Coogler at the Cannes Film Festival, he was asked if he'd ever put together such a movie.

But Coogler didn't want that to divulge that inspiration before the movie came out because he said he was anxious that people would think he was "aiming too high" for a comic book film.

Also, he mentions that in the comic-book version, the women did have their own spin-off, so to speak; so he'd be all in to work on it.

"You feel like you are watching something fresh and new", Coogler noted, according to Indiewire. Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, is all for it. For him, his favorite part of Black Panther involved the women after T'Challa disappears for a portion of the movie.

In his recent two-hour talk at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday afternoon (May 10), Coogler turned the spotlight on the female characters in the Marvel film and their importance to the overall story.

As it's been widely reported, Black Panther is the highest-grossing superhero film of all time, after it made more than $1.2 billion globally. That part of it was exciting. We were so fortunate.

Reflecting on the response to "Black Panther", Martin said: "People have felt a need for it, and people don't always feel a social need to go and see a film".
