Top three teams are in a league of their own' - Alonso

" I did some better races in the last five years, even if the last victory was five years ago", Alonso said. I'd especially like to thank everybody back in Woking for their tremendous team effort in bringing all the new parts we planned to complete our updated package on time.

"I'm happy - we were P13 in the last few qualifying sessions, so P8 today is definitely a step forward". "I'm happy with the progress we did here at McLaren and the direction things are going so I'm happy here". We've had good race pace and we need to fight to get ourselves in a good position in order to benefit from other people's mistakes.

Although it was pleasing for Fernando Alonso to make it through to his first top ten shootout of the season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Saturday, he feels the gap to the leading three teams is still too big, with the Spaniard ending more than one and a half seconds off polesitter Lewis Hamilton. The fans are not giving you extra performance because they can't push the vehicle, but they can motivate a little bit more so we seem to always perform a little bit better here.

"The downside of this position is probably still the gap, with the top six - they are in another league and we need to keep chasing and closing that gap race after race".

"Definitely this package is making me happy".

Alonso is the only driver in the top 10 who will start with supersoft tyres, having set his fastest time in Q2 with them. "Now we need to bring more things as quickly as possible". The feeling was positive in the vehicle, and we ended up very close to Q3 - Fernando just made it - which shows the parts we've brought here are working well.

"We saved them with a lot of points on Sundays with a little bit of luck and good races, but now we need to push the development and we need new parts every single race".

Asked if he feels like McLaren's 2018 season starts this weekend, Brown replied: "No the 2018 season started for us in Australia, just like everybody else". They reset what has happened in the first races and they come here and they expect you to win and deliver the result.

"Hopefully I will put on a good show for the fans tomorrow".
