Gastelum eyes middleweight title shot

UFC 224 available for order on Amazon Prime (Prime Video PPV) Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contenders Kelvin Gastelum and Ronaldo Souza meet this weekend at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, with the victor of the fight likely to be given a title fight against the victor of Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero, who square off in July at UFC 225. His TKO win over Belfort was overturned to a no-contest when Gastelum tested positive for marijuana.

The win marked Kelvin's second in a row, as he had previously starched Michael Bisping this past November in Shanghai, China.

Gastelum said: "I feel like I need to beat him and make a statement". I don't think I'd accept any other fight than the title shot. All the guys that I fought are top 10 and former champions.

In the first round it was Jacare who was very much in control as he worked the fight to the floor and then used his world-class Jiu-Jitsu to cut through his opponents guard and then hunt for an armbar, though he couldn't find the finish before the round ended.

But working against him is the fact that he was tapped out by No. 4-ranked former champion Chris Weidman a year ago, and also that his record over his last four fights, as a result, is just 2-1 (1). He also knocked out former champ Bisping, but "The Count" was a late replacement who had been badly hurt and choked by Georges St-Pierre only three weeks before.

After a performance like that, it'll be hard to deny Gastelum of a title opportunity.

Gastelum on feeling deserving of a title shot: "I definitely feel like I deserve the shot".
