MGM says sports bet ruling won't hurt Vegas

Further muddying Bevin's possible position on the ruling is he was one of three governors who signed friends of the court briefs supporting New Jersey which brought the suit decided Monday.

Musburger says sports betting and influence scandals are rare, and all that bookmakers in Las Vegas want is integrity and honesty.

The case concerned New Jersey, but the court's decision opened the door for other states that are eager to allow and tax sports gambling.

It's not talking yet about details.

Republican Senator Orrin Hatch said he would introduce legislation to "establish fundamental standards for sports betting" and allow states to decide whether or not to legalize it.

"I think the Navajo Nation is very interested in sports betting and in finding ways to expand their casino offerings", said attorney Steven Hart, who represents the state's largest tribe.

But all bets are about to be off with the governing of sports betting now with Monday's Supreme Court decision in the case of Christie (now Murphy) vs. the NCAA, which essentially overturns the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which had essentially made such gambling illegal everywhere except Nevada, Montana, Oregon and little ol' DE, the four states that had met a 1991 deadline to offer state-run betting.

That's probably a good thing - the American Gaming Association estimates at least $150 billion a year are gambled on sports in this country - 97 percent of that amount bet illegally.

"Which is with cryptocurrencies, my friend knows I'm obsessed with them, but it's kind of an easy way, it's nearly like fake money to me because I don't put real money into it".

If sports betting were pursued in Ohio, it remains to be seen whether lawmakers could do it themselves as an extension of the existing voter-approved casino language, just as they did by legalizing slots machines at horse-racing tracks as an extension of the voter-approved Ohio Lottery. All gambling activities are prohibited by the state constitution unless a specific activity is authorized in state law.

Sheridan recalled meeting a Big Apple bookie who in 1980 was raking in $250,000 a year just from "parlay cards", which offer bigger payouts to gamblers willing to bet on two or more teams. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.

In statement to ABC-7, Linder said, "We need to work closely with our legislators and regulators to better understand their vision for the state and the potential impacts of legalizing sports wagering".

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday to throw out a law that banned most sports betting in America; Nevada, of course, was always exempt.

"Arizona gaming policy to this point has been measured, regardless of the now-defunct federal legislation", he said.

Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick would/will shoot down such a proposed measure like they are on a duck hunt.

According to the legislation sponsored by Sweeney, Van Drew and Gopal, their bill would allow casinos in Atlantic City and racetracks and some former racetracks in the state to conduct wagering on professional and collegiate sporting events with the Casino Control Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement regulating the operations.

Silver also said the league would like to see a federal framework instead of a state-by-state system.

For example, last year the PGA Tour hired Genesis Sports to help with its new "Integrity Program" that began at the start of the year. "More discussion to follow at future league meetings". That law walked a fine line, stating that simulated games in which prizes are known in advance and in which participants use statistical knowledge to draft and play real athletes was not illegal sports betting. Specifically, The court's 6-3 decision struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act.

The doctrine protects state sovereignty, he wrote, and the betting law had violated it. At $1.4 billion, Pennsylvania is the No. 1 state in tax revenue from casino gambling.

In a statement, Washington State Gambling Commission Director Dave Trujillo said, "This is a significant decision that will likely change the landscape of gambling in the United States".

One research firm estimated before the ruling that if the Supreme Court were to strike down the law, 32 states would likely offer sports betting within five years.
