Nigeria name 30-man squad for 2018 World Cup

Kano Pillars' Junior Lokosa, who has a knack to score at least a goal in every two matches, is among the 30 players listed by Super Eagles' manager Gernot Rohr in Nigeria's provisional list for the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup.

Nwankwo is one of two surprise inclusions by coach Gernot Rohr after scoring seven goals in Serie A this season.

Rohr selected goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho of Deportivo La Coruna, Daniel Akpeyi and Dele Ajiboye, meaning no recall for veteran Vincent Enyeama.

Enyimba International of Aba goal keeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, plateau united goal tender, Dele Ajiboye and leading scorer in the current Nigeria professional football league, Junior Lokosa of Kano pillars are the three domestic league players that made the cut.

Midfielder John Obi Mikel was named captain.


According to the NFF, the team is expected to assemble at the Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo on May 21 to begin the final preparation for the World Cup, which will kick off on June 14 in Russian Federation.

Nigeria's training camp begins next Monday ahead of scheduled friendlies against Congo on May 28, England on June 2, and Czech Republic on June 6.

Nigeria finished their World Cup qualifying group comfortably in the first place gaining 14 points out of possible 18.

The Super Eagles will be making a sixth appearance at the World Cup tournament in Russian Federation where they will play Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D.
