England name squad for first Test against Pakistan

England's Craig Overton celebrates with team mates after dismissing New Zealand's Colin de Grandhomme during the fourth day of the first cricket test match.

Jos Buttler has been described as an "outstanding talent" by national selector Ed Smith and a "once-in-a-generation" player by Sky Sports' Rob Key after being recalled to the England Test squad.

Talking about Buttler, the national selector said that this is the right time to reintroduce the batsman to the Test cricket, adding that he would surely bring unique qualities to the team.

Ben Stokes though cleared that he gave all he had during this period for his team and was thankful for everyone at the Royals franchise who supported and played with him during his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Smith has also called up uncapped 20-year-old off-spinner Dom Bess, who is chosen after Somerset team-mate Jack Leach - a debutant in England's last Test - sustained a broken thumb.

With Jonny Bairstow to don the wicketkeeper's gloves, Buttler has been selected as a specialist batsman, a reward for his terrific run in this IPL where he smashed five half-centuries in a row.

But he has not played first-class cricket for Lancashire, his English county, since the end of last season. The selection panel feels that this is the flawless moment to reintroduce Jos to Test cricket, where he has already enjoyed some success, including a stint playing as a specialist batsman at number seven.

Buttler, on the other hand, last played in the whites back in 2016 and was overlooked for the Ashes squad.

The 20-year-old Bess is likely to make his global debut at the Home of Cricket after Leach's unfortunate injury.

Dom Bess was close to speechless when Ed Smith interrupted his morning trip round Ikea to tell him he was in line for a Lord's Test debut against Pakistan next week. "Dom's strong form, character and all-round abilities presented a compelling case for selection".
