Syria's Assad Meets With Russia's Putin In Sochi

The Syrian president said Syria is making progress in fighting "terrorism".

The Russian President said military success in Syria allows a large-scale political process leading to withdraw of foreign forces and reconstruction of country.

Russia's weapons export increased in 2017 in spite of sanctions, Rostec State Corporation CEO has told President Vladimir Putin.

Since fighting broke out in Syria in 2011, the Syrian president has traveled three times to Russian Federation for talks with Putin - visits that underscored Moscow's status as Assad's chief backer.

"The next task, of course, the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Mr Putin added. The UN has hosted several rounds of peace talks in Geneva that have made no progress towards ending the conflict.

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been attempting to resolve the conflict in the talks that started previous year in Astana in competition with a USA and UN-backed Geneva initiative. "[The two parties] have noted the necessity to create additional conditions for the resumption of full-format political process in Syria", Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"We know it will not be easy because some countries do not want stability to return to Syria. However, together with you and our other partners and friends, we will move firmly forward with the peace process", Assad added.

Assad said he also discussed with Putin economic cooperation and growing investments by Russian companies in Syria.

But rebel factions still control large parts of northwestern and southwestern Syria, while a Kurdish-led alliance backed by the United States holds most of the northeast.

The visit comes on the eve of a meeting in Sochi between Mr Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the first face-to-face talk of the year between the veteran leaders.
