De Laurentiis slams Conte, praises Ancelotti

Maurizio Sarri, the former Napoli manager, worked with Gonzalo Higuain until he was sold to Juventus, and could be a major pull for a striker who has yet to challenge himself amongst the Premier League elite.

Although Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri was the top priority and was nearly set to take charge at Chelsea, the Blues did not accept to meet Sarri's €8 million release clause.

His Napoli side were renowned for playing some of the best possession based football in Europe in recent seasons, and they pushed Juventus close for the Serie A title this season, amassing an impressive 91 league points.

'He's been good for me, I have taken things from him, like I have the [other] managers.

"With Carlo, we've felt over the years that he's a man who's always given us a sense of serenity".

Napoli have demanded that any club looking to hire Sarri must pay his almost £7 million release clause, something which the club's president Aurelio De Laurentiis stated recently is yet to happen.

"I can think of a couple of reasons (why Conte has not been sacked yet)", he told ESPN FC. It's very hard and frustrating when you don't play regularly and I've been lucky enough to do that over the majority of my career.

The defender was overlooked for friendlies with Holland and Italy during a period where he was uncertain of starting for Chelsea - although he regained his place towards the end of the campaign.

Does that mean Mertens could potentially follow Sarri to Chelsea, or even go to Manchester United or Liverpool?

"We started to collaborate together for two days in Rome and then with Ancelotti first in London, then in Canada".
