French Open 2018: Serena fights back as Nadal, Sharapova cruise

Williams wearing her distinctive "Wakanda" inspired superhero outfit became angry with herself, struggling with shot range and rusty movement.

Williams, unseeded in her first Grand Slam less than nine months after giving birth to her first child, showed no signs of fatigue on Court Philippe Chatrier, sealing victory under fading light after 9 p.m.in Paris.

She would then lose her opening round game in the Miami Open to Naomi Osaka, but, with the two wins at Roland Garros, Williams admitted she is still not at the level she was before her maternity leave.

Williams also said the outfit helped her cope with the issue of blood clots, which she revealed, in February, nearly cost her life.

Williams, who has lifted the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen three times in Paris needed one hour and 46 minutes to see off the feisty Australian on Thursday evening.

Williams also told the magazine, of which she is the cover star, that she will "never be a size 4" when referring to comments she made several years about losing weight to get down to that size. I always wanted to be a super-hero, and it's kind of my way of being a super-hero.

Third seed Cilic reached the 3rd round for the 8th time with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (3/7), 7-5 win over Polish qualifier and world number 188 Hubert Hurkacz.

Williams will now meet Germany's Julia Goerges in the third round after the 11th seed defeated Belgium's Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium in straight sets.

And she got off to a fine start too as she won the first set tie-break against Pliskova 7-6.

Serena Williams brought out her "Black Panther" catsuit again at the French Open on Wednesday, teaming with sister Venus to beat Japan's Shuko Aoyama and Miyu Kato 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in doubles.

Serena said her daughter inspires her to keep winning as she targets Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 majors.

Williams is, quite rightly, considered the queen of tennis - the best to ever do it.

She is assured of taking at least one more bow in the singles draw.

"She competes better than anybody for a long, long time".
