Casey reportedly gets 5-year deal to coach Pistons

Casey was sacked on May 11 with one year remaining on his contract at a reported $6.5 million. He clearly wants to deliver for the fans in Detroit and I believe in the strength of his leadership to do so. "He embodies our culture and will be a great representative for our franchise". With the offseason officially starting after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA Championship, it was time for the Pistons to pull the trigger.

After seven seasons at the helm, Casey was sacked by the Raptors in May despite leading Toronto to a franchise-best 59-23 record during the regular-season. He led Toronto to four Atlantic Division titles in five years, and three consecutive 50-win seasons.

He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves for a little more than one season, going 53-69. Part of getting the Pistons back on track will be fixing their offence, which ranked 22nd in both field goal percentage and points per game last season.

Dwane Casey did not stay out of the National Basketball Association for long. The 61-year-old finished his tenure as the team's winningest coach but could never get it over the hump in the playoffs. He also has experience in the league as an assistant with Dallas and Seattle. His teams qualified for the playoffs in 11 of those 14 seasons.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Pistons Owner Tom Gores and senior adviser Ed Stefanski "sold Casey with an aggressive contractual commitment and a case that together, they could make the Pistons a perennial playoff team in the Eastern Conference".

A native of Morganfield, KY, Casey played collegiately at the University of Kentucky.
