Woman Arrested For Transporting Children In Dog Kennels

A Memphis grandmother is out of jail after being arrested and charged for a video showing her traveling with children inside of two pet kennels.

The children told police their grandmother had them sit in dog cages because there was no room in the back seat of her Ford Explore - adding there were no vents in the back of the auto to keep them cool.

The children told police there wasn't much air in the kennels and they were very hot.

Leimome Cheeks, 62, has been arrested and charged on two counts of child endangerment for the disturbing incident that took place in Memphis on Saturday evening.

Cheeks has been identified as the childrens' grandmother, according to Commercial Appeal. Police said Cheeks admitted to driving the kids 35 minutes from Whitehaven to Collierville as they sat in the kennels.

Police said the children were 7 and 8 years old.

The two children involved are now being questioned by the police, who told them that Mrs Cheeks claimed there was not enough space in the truck for them to sit safely. The Memphis Police Department even posted about the case on its Facebook page Sunday to confirm her arrest.

"I really can't see her doing that", she added.

Local 24 reporter, Annette Peagler went to Cheeks home and tried to get a comment from her family, but no one answered the door.

Cowan recently bought two German Shepard puppies, neighbors told WREG.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake. Wow", neighbor Skylark Blake said. The 62-year-old is out on bond and has a Monday morning court appearance.
