Economic adviser Larry Kudlow suffers heart attack

President Donald Trump tweeted that National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow suffered a heart attack Monday evening.

The White House didn't immediately comment on his condition. He replaced Gary Cohn, who resigned after losing his battle against imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Before joining the White House, he had vigorously opposed the protectionist trade agenda that Trump promoted, but he became a forceful advocate for Trump's policies since joining the administration. He made headlines recently when he criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for "betraying" the president after the G-7 economic summit. While he had the backing of Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, he was ultimately overruled by Robert Lighthizer, the USA trade representative.

Kudlow, an unabashed supporter of free trade, joined the Trump administration earlier this year. "He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center", Trump wrote on Twitter, shortly ahead of a historic summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

Trump's choice of Kudlow to be his top economic aide elevated the influence of a longtime fixture on the business news network CNBC.
