Police Engaged In "Hostage Taking" Standoff With Armed Man In Paris

Police say a man is holding two people hostage in an office in central Paris.

French police and special police forces (BRI) secure the street as a man has taken two people hostage at a business in Paris, France, June 12, 2018.

Police said the incident was not believed to be terror-related. The information could not be officially confirmed.

Anti-terrorist police are surrounding the Mixicom computer store in the French capital's 10th arrondissement, close to the Gare du Nord Eurostar hub. He has since told authorities that he "wants to get a message to the Iranian embassy and the French government", a source at the scene said, reports DM. However, his motivation for such an encounter was unknown.

Crowds of bystanders were held back by a security perimeter at the site, where police and rescue workers were massed, deploying at least one remote-controlled robot on tracks toward the building where the armed man had barricaded himself.

Witnesses said the man claimed to be in possession of a gun and bomb.

Negotiations with the suspect were taking place, according to an Interior Ministry official who couldn't be identified because the operation was in progress.
