Rafael Nadal reaches record 11th French Open final

Rafael Nadal reaches record 11th French Open final

Backed by fans who loudly chanted her first name between games, Halep went ahead 3-0 with the help of only one victor.

"For me, the motivation to play here always is high, high as possible".

Matches resumed for about 15 minutes following a first rain delay before players were sent back to the locker room. The best? Roger Federer, of course, who's made 30 Grand Slam finals and won 20 of them.

But Makarova and Vesnina did not play together at the French Open this year after changing their entries, despite being close to securing No. 1 status. Nadal's had some challenges at Roland-Garros' championship stage over the years, but few athletes in any sport have ever been more acclimatized to a venue the way Nadal has owned the terra firma of Roland-Garros' grounds.

Both new-look pairings went out in the first round.

Del Potro had forced six break points during the first set but Nadal fended each one off.

The world number one not only seems to have an inexhaustible supply of energy to keep on going in a best-of-five-set-match on clay but his topspin forehand is also favored by the Paris conditions.

Too good for almost everyone, nearly every time, on clay. "I was close to quit".

The final is on Sunday.

"I felt that I was playing a little bit under more stress than usual, and he was able to take control of the point too many times", said Nadal.

He didn't stop there, such was his extended praise for the recently turned 32-year-old.

Rafael Nadal is into the French Open semifinals for the 11th time.

In 2011, Thiem beat his esteemed compatriot, 6-2, 6-3, in just over an hour on the indoor hardcourt of Vienna and still had to work hard to handle the heavy left-handed serve of the former world No 1.

"Nadal is still playing at only seventy-five per cent efficiency and that, still, is good enough for him to beat tough opponents like Juan Martin del Potro".

The battle wore on and on, before, on the Austrian's fifth set point, Cecchinato went long to fall two sets behind. Thiem has 13 career wins over top-10 players, and three of those victories have come this year.

Del Potro recovered well, though, breaking back in the next game.

An easy smash into the net midway through the fourth set characterised his problems, a total of 25 unforced errors compared to eight winners in the final two sets underlining the pressure being put on by Nadal.

"And I had a lot of break points in the first set".

Nadal raised his level when it mattered much and fended off three break points in the eighth game.

The world number one is still the overwhelming favorite to pick up his 11th French Open title, but former victor Mats Wilander thinks Juan Martin del Potro, Nadal's semi-final opponent could cause him some troubles.

Friday will be the second time Nadal and Del Potro meet at Roland Garros.

Garbine Muguruza overwhelmed Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 in a matchup of past French Open champions to reach the semifinals.

"And if he would have won the tiebreak, he would be full power, for sure, in the third set". But del Potro grabbed the first two points played on Thursday to take that set 7-6 (5). Coincidentally, the only time he has looked in any danger was on day 11 when Diego Schwartzman, the 11th seed, took the only set of the tournament off him.

No player in history has won as many grand slam titles at a single tournament as Nadal has in Paris.
