South Korea Blindsided By Trump War Games Agreement

In an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, Mr. Trump said he's certain that his warlike rhetoric previous year against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un convinced Mr. Kim to negotiate over giving up his nuclear weapons.

"The war games are very expensive, we pay for the majority of them", Trump told a news conference in Singapore after a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. But we'll be saving a tremendous amount of money. "However, we believe we need to seek various measures how to efficiently move forward the dialogues [as] serious talks are being conducted to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and establish relationships between North Korea and the United States".

Purdue, who has lived in Singapore and China as a businessman before his political career, said it would "be awful to throw on there any concession except for economic development" in negotiating the denuclearization of North Korea.

One South Korean official said he initially thought Trump had mis-spoke.

However, relations with North Korea, which had seemed to go well, broke down under former President George W. Bush after the USA accused North Korea of having an enriched uranium program, a major step in the nuclear weapon building process. The country announced in 2005 it had manufactured nuclear weapons.

U.S. President Donald Trump's declaration on Tuesday that he meant to end joint military exercises in Korea seemed to be news to both South Korean and U.S. military officials.

"I said when I first started, why do the bombers come from Guam?"

The Pentagon was not immediately able to flesh out Trump's remarks about suspending drills, a move the US military has long resisted.

Yes. The Kim dynasty, under Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, signed a treaty with the U.S.in 1994, known as the Agreed Framework. But they are there exclusively for the defense of South Korea.

Admittedly, Trump said Kim was very pleased with the development. "At the same time, there needs to be a peace mechanism for the peninsula, to resolve North Korea's reasonable security concerns".

During the news conference, Trump said the summit would not have happened were it not for Otto Warmbier, the college student who was arrested in North Korea and practically murdered by the regime. His parents are good friends of mine.

"So I think the rhetoric, I hated to do it, sometimes I felt foolish doing it, but we had no choice", he said.
