Sporting are about to lose their four best players - for absolutely nothing

The incident took place just days before Sporting's shock 2-1 defeat to Aves in the Portuguese Cup final on May 20, and left striker Dost nursing a nasty head wound.

But after Monday's move by Dost, Martins, Fernandes and Carvalho, the president told reporters: "We will resign if the athletes write a letter to Sporting saying, firstly, that if this management quits they will reverse their terminations and play for Sporting".

Carvalho, Fernandes and Martins are all presently with the Portuguese national team in Russian Federation, along with goalkeeper Patricio, and they have claimed "just cause" in disassociating themselves from the Lisbon club.

The upheaval follows a malicious attack on Sporting's players and staff at the Academy of Alcochete last month, where around 50 hooded supporters, armed with belts and stick, attacked the players at the end of a training session.

According to a report in A Bola, Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins is on Mauricio Pochettino's shopping list at Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 23-year-old has scored 13 goals and claimed 13 assists across all competitions this past campaign, with his pace making him a huge threat to defences. Only last summer, Record (h/t Uche Amako of the Daily Express) reported the Reds were willing to spend £43.7 million on his signature.

Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that six of their players are set to leave the club for nothing after terminating their contracts.

Patricio, Carvalho, Martins and Fernandes are all with Portugal in Russian Federation getting ready for their World Cup opener against Spain on Friday.

Klopp is in the market for a new wide man and could save a mountain of cash should Martins be successful in seeking a quick exit from Sporting.
