Trump and Kim sign agreement on denuclearization

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous USA administrations have failed to do.

As Trump was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7.

Basketball star and improbable North Korean envoy Dennis Rodman broke down in tears live on television Tuesday as he recounted the hostility he faced for meeting dictator Kim Jong Un.

Despite the optimistic rhetoric, the summit did not produce an ironclad nuclear agreement or a peace treaty to end the Korean War - two possibilities Trump raised ahead of the talks.

The meetings also served as a sort of ice breaker as the teams worked to get better acquainted after decades of minimal U.S.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Mr Kim and Mr Lee discussed relations between their countries, as well as developments in North Korea and the region, including recent positive developments on the Korean peninsula.

A USA official confirmed to CNN Trump's departure was moved up by more than 12 hours because Kim set his own departure for shortly after the summit, as first reported by Bloomberg.

Still, during the preliminary meeting, both Trump and Kim appeared diplomatic but warm, smiling and clasping hands before making a joint statement to the press.

Trump pushed back on criticism that giving the North Korean leader a meeting with an American president was a major concession made with nothing of value received in return. While he wasn't an official part of the USA delegation or involved the meeting, Rodman, who has formed an unlikely relationship with the murderous North Korean dictator, was in Singapore to show his support for the meeting.

But other reports said it was Kim who chose to leave early, even though Trump was willing to stick around.

Donald Trump has arrived in Singapore only a couple of hours after Kim Jong-Un.

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with reliable security assurances and other benefits.

White House officials have said Rodman will play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations.

The president is now in Singapore, just hours away from his historic meeting with Kim.

Sung Kim arrives at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to meet with North Korean vice-foreign minister Choe Son Hui, June 11, 2018, in Singapore. -North Korea meetings, including translators, photographers and logistical staff, asking how they can be sure they are not actually spies.

Trump, too, has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying additional meetings may be necessary.

"This is a leader who is really an unknown personality", Trump said. Four of the nation's six nuclear tests have taken place since Kim took power in 2011. "I also learned that he loves his country very much". "Very, very quickly. Absolutely", Trump said when asked by reporters if Kim had agreed to denuclearize. He told reporters he thinks he will know nearly immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: "I will know, just my touch, my feel. That's what I do".
