Watch Patti Murin perform at the 2018 Tony Awards

The Band's Visit, the Broadway musical based on an Israeli film, swept the Tony Awards on Sunday night, taking home 10 prizes - including best musical - at the ceremony in NY.

Before introducing Bruce Springsteen at the Tony Awards, Robert De Niro went just a bit off script. "I'm going to say one thing: F-- Trump", De Niro said, receiving a standing ovation. Instead, he first took to task the USA president himself. It was censored for the TV audience, but De Niro's lips were easy to read.

The legendary actor urged the audience to vote in November and lauded Springsteen for his own political commitment before the singer sat at a piano for a moving performance based on his "Springsteen on Broadway" show that had him singing his classic hit, "My Hometown".

De Niro then circled back to Springsteen, saying, "Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else".

He also thanked producer Orin Wolf "for telling a small story about Arabs and Israelis getting along at a time where we need that more than ever".

De Niro continued the streak for a third month in a row when he said in a speech in LA: 'A college education is important, but education without humanity is ignorance. Although De Niro was heavily censored during the USA telecast, his comments weren't bleeped during the Australian telecast.

While CBS was quick to catch the swear for USA audiences, the word wasn't censored during the Australian broadcast. "The offensive language was deleted from the broadcast".

A noted liberal, he has been critical of President Trump, a Republican, at other show business events, but none with the high profile and reach of the Tony Awards, which salute performances in Broadway theater.
