Australian couple die after fall at Portugal beach

Two tourists have died falling from a cliff while attempting to take selfies at a scenic seaside town in Portugal.

A British woman and Australian man have died after falling 100 feet off a beach wall in Portugal while taking a selfie.

They fell above more than 30 metres, the newspaper reported, adding that a beach cleaner had found the bodies early on Tuesday morning.

The couple are believed to be from Britain and Australia.

It is not the first time tourists have fallen off the wall.

Cops have sealed off the beach while investigations continue into exactly what happened.

Previous reports suggested they were an Australian couple, but the Department of Foreign Affairs told SBS News it was providing assistance to the family of one Australian who died in Portugal.

"We found a mobile phone [at the bottom of] on the sea wall which indicated they might have been taking a selfie when the phone fell - they leaned over to get it and fell", he said.

Rui Pereira da Terra, head of the local rescue force, said: 'Everything seems to indicate that the fall happened when they were probably trying to take a selfie.

Meanwhile, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has stated that it was in touch with local authorities "following the death of a British woman in Portugal and stand ready to provide support to her family".

The Australian Embassy in Lisbon has also been informed of the death.

The beach at Pescadores is surrounded by cliffs and a 30-metre high wall covered in shrubs.

It said in a statement: "The department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident".
