"Throughout the race I was never thinking about the end result, it was always about the next day or the next climb".

Thomas also defended his overall race lead with a total time of 20:51:19. I can rest a little bit and wait for July.

He follows in the footsteps of compatriots Bradley Wiggins, who won the race twice, and three-time victor Chris Froome. Bilbao made his move late on during the gruelling stage that is nearly the same as stage 11 in the Tour de France next month, with four major climbs and a summit finish at la Rosiere.

"The Tour de France has been my goal since start of season, but the Volta a Catalunya set things back", Yates said about crashing out of the Catalonia tour in March. "I managed to get a few more bonus seconds which is good". "I look forward to the Tour now".

"It's been a learning process starting in a new team so getting this win for UAE is great", he said. "They're super hard climbing stages and even harder over the weekend". So today I chose to wait.

"I could take the stage win on the last corner".

After catching up with the main leaders with 30km remaining, he crossed the line a handful of seconds off the pace without ever being in danger of losing possession of the yellow jersey.

Adam Yates was extremely happy to win the stage after a hard week of racing.

Baudet and Martin, third and fourth in the overall standings respectively, were unable to stay with Thomas, who broke clear of their small group 500 metres from the line.

Team Sky's Thomas suffered two punctures during the 136km stage from Moutiers to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc, but took a wheel from a teammate on the second occasion and was paced back to the peloton by Michal Kwiatkowski and Dylan van Baarle.
