Raptors assistant Nurse promoted to head coach

The Toronto Raptors will name assistant Nick Nurse as their next head coach, ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

Toronto Raptors assistant coach Nick Nurse gestures during a game against the Detroit Pistons on February 29, 2016.

Nurse is finalizing contract terms with Toronto, but met with president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster on Tuesday morning to accept the job, sources said.

Casey was sacked last month and was hired by the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

NICK Nurse spent nearly three decades paying his coaching dues, toiling with teams in Britain, Italy and Belgium, college basketball and the G League.

The Toronto Raptors had the best regular season in franchise history this year, but after LeBron dealt them yet another postseason beatdown, the franchise elected to fire coach Dwane Casey. So, their final two candidates were current assistant coach Nick Nurse and Spurs assistant Ettore Messina.

Nurse, who is from Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, also coached in the D-League, winning championships in 2011 with the Iowa Energy and in 2013 with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The decision comes a month after Casey was let go and one day after he was hired by the Detroit Pistons as their new coach.

Nurse coached in Europe for 11 years starting in 1996.

Toronto is now the only National Basketball Association franchise without a head coach. "I know where we started".
