Robbie Williams to open World Cup despite Party Like A Russian track

The World Cup kicks-off in Russian Federation on June 14, and the usual suspects are among the nations most fancied to lift the famous trophy aloft in Moscow.

Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina will entertain the crowd at the opening ceremony of the World Cup at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Williams said he was "happy and excited" about the "unique performance" in front of 80,000 fans and many millions all over the world and that it was a boyhood dream.

Brazil's two-time World Cup victor Ronaldo will also feature in a ceremony billed as consisting of a new format.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony will have a slightly different format compared to previous editions of the tournament.

The underlying theme of celebrating not only football but also the host country will be represented by a performance from Garifullina.

Brazil, favourites to win the World Cup for a record-extending sixth time in Russian Federation, are the best-supported nation outside of the hosts and the US, with 72,512 tickets sold in that country.

"I don't know if that can happen, but what I hope is that the national team does its best in the World Cup and that we can come home with the trophy".

"The opening match is always a very symbolic one - it is that instant when you realise that the big moment you, as a player or fan, have been waiting for four years has finally arrived".

Trump also assured that the USA would hold the tournament "in a similarly open and festive manner" as the 1996 and 2002 Olympic Games that the United States hosted, the Times reported.

Ronaldo, who scored 62 goals in 98 appearances for Brazil, also scored over 100 goals for Real Madrid during a four-and-a-half year stint last decade.
