Toronto Raptors to hire Nick Nurse as head coach

On Tuesday, reports surfaced announcing the Raptors had settled on assistant coach Nick Nurse as their next head man.

Before that he spent a decade coaching in Europe, include a stint in the British Basketball League and also coached in the G-League, where he won two championships. The results were mixed in the first year, but maybe over a larger sample - with Nurse now in charge - there will be even more improvement.

One month into their coaching search, Masai Ujiri and the Toronto Raptors may have neared a decision on who will be the team's next head coach.

The short version of that: Hiring internally is unsexy, but most signals point to Nurse being a legitimately good candidate as an National Basketball Association head coach.

Toronto fired Dwane Casey on May 11 after the team was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinal.

The Raptors have an expensive payroll led by Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. Yesterday afternoon it was announced that Casey had agreed to a five-year deal to become the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons.
