US, Mexico and Canada win race to host 2026 World Cup

US, Mexico and Canada win race to host 2026 World Cup

On Wednesday in Moscow, the trio bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada beat Morocco in a vote to earn the hosting rights to the 2026 World Cup.

North America will host the first 48-team competition, beating Morocco 134 votes to 65. The U.S. previously hosted the World Cup in 1994 and Mexico staged it in 1970 and 1986.

"The issue about who will get automatic bids to the '26 World Cup, if that's the question, that is not Concacaf's decision that's FIFA's decision and that will be made in the passage of time", Cordeiro said. Hosting World Cups and Olympic Games is openly a politicians' prestige-burnishing project now, not only for Russia's president Vladimir Putin or Qatar's Emir, seeking soft power from hosting in 2022.

Each of the three host nations is set to stage a game on the opening day of the tournament.

President Donald Trump has interfered in the voting process, much to FIFA's chagrin. The United States will play host to at least 60 games, including the quarterfinals, while Mexico and Canada will take 10 each.

To cut down on travel, the USA -led bid proposed having teams play all their games in the same regional areas. President Trump promised athletes would be able to enter the United States "without discrimination" ahead of the decision, per CNN. In the end it wasn't enough, and Americans fans can look forward to the return of soccer's greatest event in what can only be seen as a massive boost for the domestic game.

The Moroccans were seeking to bring the World Cup to northern Africa for the first time. More than 5.8 million tickets are expected to be sold, generating over $2 billion in ticketing revenue, according to the winning bid's projections.

Soccer is Mexico's national sport, but is still considered a niche sport in the United States and Canada.

Added Reed: "In our country of Canada we've got three wonderful host cities that have had great success in the past in hosting worldwide sporting events, including the [2015] Women's World Cup, [2014] Women's Under-20 World Cup, [2007] Men's Under-20 World Cup".

They are the most compelling reasons why we would be the best hosts. "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?" To counter concerns about severe travel, the bid said teams would be placed in regional clusters. "But hopefully we can have the most successful World Cup of all time and it needs all people from all three of our countries". In particular, Trump has been engaged in a high-profile dispute with Canadian President Justin Trudeau over steel and aluminum tariffs, which led to a contentious G7 summit last week.

A joint-bid from the US, Mexico, and Canada, dubbed "United 2026", defeated Morocco's proposal in a landslide vote in Russian Federation on Wednesday. Thus far, cities in contention to host are New York/New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco/San Jose, and Cincinnati. Federation Internationale de Football Association will select up to 16 cities for matches.
