Woman charged after allegedly putting children in pet kennels

Leimome Cheeks, 62, was taken into custody after a passerby filmed the moment her two grandchildren crawled from the cramped cages in the trunk of her vehicle, local station WREG reported.

A Memphis police affidavit says the children, ages 7 and 8, told officers there wasn't room inside Cheeks' vehicle Saturday, so she told them to get inside the kennels.

The viral video, which showed two kennels and another child by the auto, led to an investigation after the Memphis Police Department received a complaint, according to police documents seen by Reuters.

"I'm just so sad for the babies".

Other neighbours Eugene and Melanie Richmond described her as a "super good neighbour" and "a real caring person".

Fox 13 Memphis interviewed one of Cheeks' neighbors who said she thinks the grandmother didn't have bad intentions. "She's such a nice lady", a neighbor told WREG-TV. "It's hard to say", Skylarr Blake said.

Cheeks told police that she placed the children in the kennels, but she made sure to check on them periodically.

"When I saw her face on Facebook", she said, "I was like, wait a minute, that looks like my neighbor across the street". Something is going on with her. She said they were later allowed to ride in the backseat.

The station has also been in contact with the man who recorded what happened.

He told WREG he hopes the video will motivate others to call authorities when they see wrong things happening. The 62-year-old is out on bond and has a Monday morning court appearance.
