Arsenal to play Chelsea in International Champions Cup

Arsenal to play Chelsea in International Champions Cup

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery has a hard job on his hands replacing the legendary Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

Premier League champions Manchester City will start their title defence at Arsenal, who will be under the stewardship of new manager Unai Emery.

But the former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla coach has been given a daunting task at the outset of his reign, with Arsenal kicking off the 2018-19 season at home to Pep Guardiola's champions on the weekend beginning August 11 before then travelling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea a week later.

The pair are among six Premier League clubs in the competition, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool also competing.

Liverpool will host the first Merseyside derby of the season on December 1, with the return fixture at Everton's Goodison Park slated for March 2.

It is a similar story for neighbours United, who begin at home to Leicester.

Liverpool's start appears more challenging.

Jurgen Klopp's side enjoyed an up-and-down season past year as their free-flowing attacking football drove fear into every Premier League defender.

The Reds are set to kickstart their league season at Anfield for the first time since 2014-15 having been scheduled to face Manuel Pellegrini's team on August 11.

The Blues face a trip to Huddersfield as they look to regain their title, while Spurs will be travelling to Rafa Benitez's Newcastle to open their account.

But given the way that the club handled the expectations and pressure of this past season and have wasted little time getting deals done this summer, it may not be a huge surprise if those closer to the periphery of the top six were concerned about what the newly-promoted side may achieve.
