England's Marcus Rashford misses World Cup training after knee injury

Rashford sat out on the advice of England's medical staff after sustaining what manager Gareth Southgate described on Tuesday as a "slight knock" during the squad's final training session at St George's Park, but the problem is not expected to affect his availability for Monday's opening World Cup match against Tunisia in Volgograd. As such, Southgate has been reluctant to be drawn into talking about England's chances of winning the competition.

The Manchester United youth product, who has scored thrice while on global duty, was set to attend his first World Cup this month, although his most recent injury has put his inclusion in doubt.

"We are seeing a team that is enjoying each other's company, getting on well, is very proud to represent the nation". There was a clear shift in the identity of the team, we went to a back three and people have been warmed by that, not only the young players in this squad, but the young players in the system and the success with the junior teams. We ask people to pay a lot of money to watch football.

Despite the improving relations with the supporters and more optimistic mood within the country, few associated with England expect the team to win the World Cup on July 15.

"We are aiming to win the first game, then to target the second, and take that attitude to the World Cup". I have worked my whole life to get to where I am now in a World Cup squad, and to showcase my talent in the World Cup stage, playing in my position. Constantly trying to improve, playing in a style that we've used in the a year ago or so and that people have warmed to.

"We hope we can send people to work the following day having enjoyed our matches", said Southgate. "We know each game is going to be tough but we're fully prepared for that first game".

"I'm confident it won't happen (again) - I won't say 100 per cent because you never know in football - but in this team we wear our heart on our sleeve".

"I think that when you are enjoying it more, you play your best football".
