Lucas Torreira: Arsenal in talks to sign Uruguay midfielder from Sampdoria

Arsenal have agreed a deal worth around £22m to sign Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper and Liverpool target Bernd Leno this summer, according to CalcioMercato.

It was reported last month by BBC Sport's David Ornstein the Gunners were set to land Sokratis in a £16 million transfer.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper has just one year left on his current contract.

Since replacing Arsene Wenger as manager, Unai Emery has already bolstered the defence with the free transfer of Stephan Lichsteiner and a £16 million deal for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos but adding physical presence in midfield is another priority. Despite being only 26-years-old, he has amassed an impressive 289 Bundesliga appearances and is rated as one of the top young 'keepers in European football.

It is believed that Leverkusen are willing to accept less than Leno's £24.6million release clause, but want around £19.4million plus bonuses for the six-time Germany worldwide. During his time at Sevilla, in particular, Emery showed he could get the best out of players with plenty of potential.

That's because Emery is working within a limited budget this summer and rather than pay his £21.9m buy-out fee up front, Arsenal will stump up a slightly higher sum but spread across three years. However, based on his recent displays in Germany it's not an acquisition that's going to strike fear into the rest of the Premier League.
