Millie Bobby Brown speaks out after leaving Twitter following anti-gay abuse

Millie Bobby Brown speaks out after leaving Twitter following anti-gay abuse

The photoshopped images of the 14-year-old star saying homophobic and offensive things were said to be ironically depicting Brown, who has publicly supported LGBTQ rights for some time.

Brown only deleted her main Twitter account. It's unclear why Brown was the target of online harassers, although the actress is an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ causes and advocates for GLAAD's Together movement.

In 2017, Brown received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work as the telekinetic teenager on Stranger Things. To make up these wildly false memes and stories about her is especially heinous.

Millie herself frequently posted on social media, updating on her whereabouts and posting sweet messages with boyfriend YouTuber Jacob Sartorius.

The meme's recent rise in popularity - after it started out with the hateful hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown - has been somewhat ironic, but in general, it has a deeply sinister tone. It still isn't entirely clear where the meme originated, although Variety and The Wrap report that the memes have been attributed to members of the LGBT community as an "inside joke" on the social platform.
