Stock markets rise slightly ahead of Trump-Kim meeting

Outside the Korean community, local peace groups called for the United States government to allow North and South Korea to negotiate a deal for peace on their own.

The young North Korean leader is staying under heavy guard at a city center hotel and had not appeared in public on Monday until about 9 p.m., when one of his security officials buzzing about the hotel lobby shouted "It's all ready!"

Mr Kim spent the evening before the meeting visiting some of Singapore's tourist sites. Trump labelled the North Korean leader "Little Rocket Man" in a speech to the UN General Assembly.

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"It should go fairly well, but people should not expect so much for the first time", Rodman told reporters at the airport.

"Why would Kim... believe any commitments President Trump makes when he arbitrarily tears up an agreement with which the other party is complying?" said Antony Blinken, who was deputy secretary of state under Barack Obama.

The agreement quickly broke down when the USA froze assets belonging to Macau-based Banco Delta Asia, which was suspected of laundering millions of dollars for the North Korean regime.

Trump has taken keen interest in the pageantry of the day, insisting the pictures beamed around the world reflect a commanding leader making a decisive, world-altering move.

Trump had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with Kim.

Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days. The official cautioned, however, that the schedule could always change if meeting goes well and there is more to discuss.

Their first meeting will be at 1pm at the Capella Hotel, a five-star resort on Singapore's Sentosa Island - and a former pirate haunt. "We've been waiting for one nation since we've been separated".

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that happened, Pompeo said. In advance of their private session, Trump predicted "tremendous success", while Kim said through an interpreter that "we have come here after overcoming" obstacles.

The sides first spoke through intelligence channels, with USA analysts working to determine Kim's true willingness to abandon a nuclear program started by his grandfather and viewed by Pyongyang as a security blanket from outside aggressors.

Kim's trip to Singapore is his furthest journey he has made since taking power in late 2011 upon his father's death. Even if the USA -backed "maximum pressure" campaign is no more amid the burst of diplomacy in the first half of 2018, North Korea has a long way to go before it'll get to where Singapore is today. They were prompted by North Korea's withdrawl from the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and their interception of a USA spy plane.

More than 2,500 journalists have convened here, with each leader's every movement tracked carefully.

The sitting leaders of North Korea and the United States have never met before.

With much of the world focused on the historic summit between the two leaders, Trump also made sure to press his case that his administration had been good for the US economy.
