Saudi World Cup team plane lands safely after engine fire

The Saudi Football Association issued a statement saying that "The Saudi Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all the members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine".

Saudi Arabia's official team plane was forced to make an emergency landing after catching fire with the World Cup squad on board.

The team were traveling on a Rossiya Airbus A319 from St Petersburg to Rostov-on-Don, where they are due to play their second Group A match against Uruguay on Wednesday.

Videos shared on social media showed an aircraft that posters identified as the Saudi team's plane with its wing on fire while it was in the air.

Saudi Arabia are set to face Uruguay on Wednesday at the Rostov Arena before finishing the group stages with a clash against Egypt next Monday. The Saudi team was seen calmly leaving the plane on its way to the team hotel in Rostov.

The team were flying to Rostov-on-Don for their second match, against Uruguay on Wednesday, after they were thrashed 5-0 by Russian Federation in the opening game of the tournament.

It's going from bad to worse for Saudi Arabia at the World Cup.
