Donald Trump, nervous Republicans scramble for legislative fix to family separation crisis

President Donald Trump on Tuesday repeated his false claim that Democrats are exclusively responsible for his decision to separate migrant children from their parents when they attempt to illegally enter the United States.

In this post, we're answering a question we received: Why do they take the children away from their parents at the border? Now, there's an audio clip of children who have been separated from their parents.

"Democrats are the problem".

"Quit separating the kids!"

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, pleaded with Republicans on the panel to "stand up" to Trump. Yet the classic rambling stem-winder delivered by Trump left members grasping for a clear sense of whether he supports both of the GOP immigration bills they plan to vote on later this week.

President Donald Trump's supporters see themselves as victims of a manipulative media reporting on child detention camps for young migrants taken from their parents at the border.

"Nobody likes seeing babies ripped from their mothers' arms", White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on "Meet the Press" Sunday.

Mr. Trump has said he will sign either bill into law.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday dug in on his zero tolerance policy at the Mexican border, and as the uproar of separating children from their parents grows, six of the seven GOP House members from IL - who usually don't split with Trump - distanced themselves or disagreed outright with Trump's actions.

So why do I say this is going to fail? "Get it done, always keeping in mind that we must have strong border security", Trump said.

But a defiant Trump sounded unfazed by the mounting pressure to alleviate the situation before it ruptures into a public relations disaster for his party.

As a result, children are taken away from their parents, because they can not be taken to adult jails.

"You're protecting Trump!" accused a third, amid a chorus of boos.

But Democratic leaders have pushed back.

Calling for an immediate fix, Schumer added: "The president can end this crisis with the flick of his pen, and he needs to do so now".

At the same time, many of those Republicans dared not stray too far from Trump and his agenda, given his popularity with his conservative base. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions urging him to suspend the policy immediately to give Congress time to address the issue.

The United Nations has slammed the separation practice as unconscionable, while Amnesty International blasted it as "nothing short of torture".

Protesters also demonstrated outside the Customs and Border Patrol headquarters in Washington, where faith leaders lambasted Sessions' recent use of biblical verse to defend Trump's call to obey the law even if it results in the separations.

In the meantime, some citizens said, undocumented children are being used as pawns.

"The children will be taken care of - put into foster care or whatever", Kelly said. All eyes are on the administration as it continues to grapple with a nationwide outcry over its "zero tolerance" policy of separating children from immigrant parents at the U.S. -Mexico border. "I feel very honestly that it's their fault that the children have been separated, because they're bringing them in illegally".

The bill mandates that the Department of Homeland Security hold any adult only charged with a misdemeanor who crossed the border with a child under age 18 with their child, at specific family detainment facilities. There are now 12,000 children in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services. Many who set out on the trek from the troubled region claim they face mortal threats because of extortion, rape, murder and forced recruitment into gangs that target vulnerable communities.

"(President Donald Trump) could pick up the phone and stop the separation of families seeking refuge in the US.
