The detainment of migrant children in the USA has erupted in a torrent of outrage as news outlets have reported on the separation of families.

Stephanie Grisham, Melania's spokesperson, said the First Lady was keen to thank staff and have a look at the facilities for herself.

She put the jacket back on as she disembarked from her plane back at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington.

This is now a very sensitive topic to many Americans and the fact that Melania wore this jacket to meet with those immigrant children who have been separated from their parents, due to Donald Trump's policies, is very offensive.

The conflicting statements have done little to quell the outrage over the jacket's message, with critics calling it tone-deaf and offensive in light of the highly divisive family separation policy unfolding at the Texas-Mexico border.

Of the more than 2,300 migrant children the Trump administration separated from their families since May, about 500 have been reunited with their parents, a senior Trump administration official told The Associated Press Thursday.

This isn't the first fashion choice by Melania that has irked the United States public, as she also wore stiletto heels to Texas after Hurricane Harvey.

Or maybe it was a different message to the media - "I really don't care what you think [of me]".

She continued: "While we're going through that process she's going to lend her support and promote family reunification and I'm sure she'll continue to give her husband opinions on what she's thinking along the way".

She removed it before she arrived in McAllen, Texas, to tour a detention center.

She visited three classrooms, each time asking the children where they came from, their ages, how long they'd been at the centre and their favourite subjects. She also said the first lady's visit with the children in Texas "impacted @flotus greatly". Fashion speaks - and Mrs. Trump, a former fashion model, is known to carefully select her outfits before public appearances, paying careful attention to the designer and tone of her sartorial selection. "She wants to see a realistic view of what's happening". Grisham sent out a tweet saying the first lady's visit with children in Texas impacted the first lady "greatly".
