Late-Arriving Brazil Snatch Victory From Costa Rica

Late-Arriving Brazil Snatch Victory From Costa Rica

After a ponderous start, Brazil enjoyed a gradual crescendo during the first period but their dominance in possession was not reflected in chances created.

In the 78th minute a brilliant Brazil attack was ended when Neymar got the ball in the box, turned inside and tried to make an absolute meal out of a stray hand from Costa Rica defender Oscar Duarte.

Serbia now leads Group E with three points while Brazil and Switzerland are tied at one.

In the 13th minute Los Ticos almost snatched a shock lead on the break as Cristian Gamboa sprinted forward down the right and pulled the ball back to a wide open Celso Borges in space.

However, Coutinho's 91st-minute strike rescued the Selacao an important victory which puts them top of the group, and Neymar soon struck to consign Costa Rica to elimination.

Philippe Coutinho stabbed home from six metres out in the 91st minute and then Neymar volleyed a second six minutes later to get the five-times world champions up and running in their pursuit of a sixth title.

Neymar curled around the right-hand post from 18 yards after the defence opened up for him in the 72nd minute, before the officials arrived at the correct decision via VAR to deny him a penalty.

"It's not normal to cry in the second game of a World Cup", Brazil's biggest newspaper, O Globo, said.

Brazil's journey back to Sochi has begun following their smash-and-grab win over Costa Rica at the World Cup on Friday.

Despite dominating possession, Brazil showed rare leaks in its steady defense, with Costa Rica threatening on a couple of early chances of their own. As such, it appeared just a matter of time before the first goal would arrive for the Brazilians.

- Neymar has been fouled 14 times so far in the 2018 World Cup, more than any other player.

- Neymar has scored 56 goals in 87 matches for Brazil - only Pele (77) and Ronaldo (62) have scored more.
