First lady visits immigrant children at Texas-Mexico border

First lady visits immigrant children at Texas-Mexico border

First lady Melania Trump attempted to show her compassion Thursday with a visit to the border between US and Mexico, where undocumented immigrant families have been separated, but her message may have been muffled by a fashion choice.

Trump planned to tour two facilities, both in McAllen, according to a White House pool report: The Ursula Border Patrol Processing Center, a Customs and Border Patrol/DHS intake center for migrant families, and Upbring New Hope Children's Shelter, which part of Lutheran Social Services.

The green, hooded military jacket from Zara had the words written graffiti-style on the back.

"Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director, said that there was no "hidden message" and shared the hashtag "#ItsJustAJacket".

The $39 jacket, which Mrs. Trump donned before and after a visit to migrant children in Texas on Thursday, has become the ideal blank canvas to sound off online.

But Trump's fashion has often played a leading role during her tenure as first lady.

In fact, the first lady's sartorial choices have been fodder for several episodes of Twitter mocking, including the $51,000 Dolce & Gabbana jacket she wore in Italy previous year.

The first lady commented in a written statement Thursday after she returned from touring the Upbring New Hope Children's Center in McAllen, Texas. Trump was not wearing the jacket when she landed in McAllen. "It is my hope that Members of Congress will finally reach across the aisle and work together to solve this problem with common sense immigration reform that secures our borders and keeps families together".

Grisham also tweeted this: "Today's visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly".

"She will continue to update her husband", said Grisham, confirming what was reported first Wednesday by CNN, that the first lady had been lobbying the President behind the scenes, encouraging him to stop the separation of children as swiftly as possible, either via legislative process or executive power. The administration also has called for a permanent legislative fix but congressional Republicans said the House was likely to reject two immigration bills created to halt the practice of splitting up families and address a range of other immigration issues.

"I'm here to learn about your facility", she said.

Prior to that the first lady had been the centre of press attention after she vanished from the public eye and was not seen for nearly a month.

She had changed into more sensible sneakers by the time she got off the plane in Texas but the Twitterverse had a field day sneering.

The Department of Health and Human Services has yet to release any details on how they will reunite the 2,300 children separated from their families.

"Right now, we're averaging 42 to 45 days", de la Cerda said.

Hours after the photo was taken, Grisham issued a second statement on her official Twitter account blasting the media. She was told the children there, most of whom are between the ages of 12 and 17, are usually "distraught" when they first enter. Fashion speaks - and Mrs. Trump, a former fashion model, is known to carefully select her outfits before public appearances, paying careful attention to the designer and tone of her sartorial selection.
