Five women NGO workers gangraped at gunpoint in Jharkhand

Meanwhile, a case of gang-rape against unknown persons has been registered at Arki police station and three persons have reportedly been identified, said the New Indian Express. Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, Sharma said the NCW has also written to Jharkhand Director General of Police DK Pandey to probe the matter properly and has directed him to apprise the commission about action being taken in the matter at the earliest. The women were accompanied by four men and two nuns as they performed a street play to raise awareness of human trafficking in the Khunti district on Tuesday when at least six armed men attacked them. We have also announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000.

"Fr Aien and others were detained for questioning in the morning and were later released on personal bond".

The FIR accuses Fr Alfanso Aien of the RC Mission School for not reporting/informing the police about women's abduction and subsequent rape, said Khunti SP Ashwini Sinha.

Sister Ranjita could not be contacted. "It is now going to become more hard to work on this issue".

India has seen an increase in reports of human trafficking in recent years. "It must be found out whether the local administration was kept in the loop, considering that various kinds of movements, which are decidedly anti-government, are being carried out".

Sources said the accused had shot a video of the crime on the cellphones of the victims and removed the chips before returning the gadgets to them.

They were taken to a nearby forest where the women were raped and the men were beaten up.

He went on to say that "a team of street performing artists had gone to perform in a school in Kochan, the remotest area of Khunti when some men came and threatened them". "They told the women that such initiatives were part of government efforts and, therefore, such activities wouldn't be allowed in the area where pathalgadi (autonomous rule through gram sabhas) has been carried out", an official said. Patthalgadi is a traditional practice among tribals in which they put up stone slabs with names of their ancestors.
