Scott Pruitt Resigns as Head of the EPA After Restaurant Confrontation

"Before everyone gets excited about Pruitt, remember we're going to get all the same horrific policy under Andrew Wheeler, without any of the comic, attention-drawing personal corruption", Vox environment writer David Roberts tweeted after President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had accepted Pruitt's resignation. Trump tweets that Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler will assume the acting administrator position Monday.

Trump writes on Twitter, "Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job".

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", the president tweeted. The Washington Post reports top Pruitt aides have detailed further questionable spending and management decisions to congressional investigators.

In that last instance, former aides said Pruitt enlisted them to get him tickets to the Rose Bowl college football game, help his daughter get an internship at the White House, help his wife franchise a Chick-fil-A restaurant, help his wife get a high-paying job with a conservative activist group, and book hotel reservations on their personal credit cards without ever paying them back.

As the former Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt worked hard to burnish his anti-gay creds, opposing marriage equality and the rights of transgender students. He was also found by the Government Accountability Office to have violated federal spending law when purchasing a $43,000 soundproof phone booth in his office. Pruitt "had at one point three different schedules". Many of the EPA regulations Pruitt scraped or delayed had not yet taken effect, and the tens of thousands of lost coal mining jobs the president pledged to bring back never materialized.

They asked the EPA's inspector general, Arthur Elkins, to take appropriate steps to hold Pruitt accountable. Many questioned the ethics of him renting an apartment in Washington, D.C., from the wife of an energy lobbyist and traveling frequently to his home state of Oklahoma on the taxpayers' dime.

"From moving to roll back strong fuel economy standards, to repealing the Clean Power Plan, to undermining chemical regulation, to suppressing climate science, to advocating for US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Scott Pruitt made the EPA stand for Every Polluter's Ally", he said in a statement. Pruitt also maintained incomplete official calendars to hide his... Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was sacked a year ago after it was disclosed he took costly charter flights instead of commercial planes.

"This is a restaurant that is very outspoken about being protective of the environment", the manager told the New York Daily News.
