Environment Canada issues statement for the Maritimes about Tropical Storm Chris

The hurricane center said Beryl's remnant had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 kph) late Sunday and was moving west-northwestward at 26 miles per hour (43 kph). By midweek, Chris may intensify into a hurricane as it continues to become better organized.

Chris, the third storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, was named Sunday morning as it gained strength off the coast of the Carolinas.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system's winds would fall below gale force during the night as it headed on a path expected to take it south of those islands.

The NHC forecasts the storm to meander off the coast for the next several days.

Tropical storm Beryl is expected to move near to or pass south of the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday, the National Hurricane Center (N.H.C.) said its in 5:00 a.m. advisory on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Beryl - the second named storm of this season - is expected to dump heavy rain over the Lesser Antilles at the end of the weekend. It was centered 210 miles (335 kilometers) east of Martinique and was moving west-northwestward at 23 mph (37 kph). As a result, it is forecast to continue generating life-threatening waves and rip currents for the Mid-Atlantic beaches.

It is said Beryl will "degenerate into a trough of low pressure" as it moves into the eastern caribbean sea by Monday.

The Tropical Storm Watch for Barbados has therefore been discontinued.

Those living near Puerto Rico's south coast were wary of the rain forecast, since they were the first ones hit by Maria and saw some of the biggest damage.

"However, due to the continuing uncertainties associated with Beryl, any possible motion towards the north could bring the system closer to the islands, thus, watches or warnings cannot be ruled out", the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said in its 11am update on Sunday.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
