Noida now has the largest mobile factory in the world

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in who is on a visit to India will inaugurate the new 35-acre Samsung Electronics facility on Monday, news agency IANS reported on Sunday.

Samsung Electronics Co., the South Korean maker of Galaxy phones, said it is opening the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing facility on the outskirts of the Indian capital, as smartphone demand surges. It's going to be one of the largest mobile phone manufacturing units in the world in terms of production capacity, located at Sector 81 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The new factory is part of a $700 million expansion plan.

According to HC Hong, President and CEO, Samsung India, a bigger manufacturing plant will help them cater to the growing demand for Samsung products across the country.

The Noida plant was set up in 1996 and is the first of two manufacturing units in India for the company. The current mobile phone manufacturing plant was introduced back in 2005, though it only started manufacturing phones in 2007.


Last year, Samsung invested Rs 4,915 crore to double its manufacturing capacity for smartphones and refrigerators in the Noida plant. In just about an year of the announcement, Samsung's Noida plant is all-ready to double production. India is a big opportunity across price segments, including 2G feature phones. It also looks like the capacity for manufacturing refrigerators will also be increased with the new plant.

India's smartphone market grew 14 per cent with total shipments of 124 million units previous year, the fastest pace of growth among the world's top 20 markets, according to technology research firm IDC. The total mobile phone market in India for 2017 was around 288 million, according to IDC data with 164 million shipments of feature phones in total.

"For Samsung, India is among the top five smartphone markets globally".

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi said in April it will set up three more factories in India.

Starting today, the South Korean President will hold talks with PM Modi on several issues, including the situation on the Korean peninsula and ways to boost bilateral trade and defence cooperation.
